Last night, Avid qualified Pro Tools 2021.12 as working fine for Monterey 12.3.
Amidst all of the complaints about Avid not releasing a Monterey compatible version since Monterey’s launch at the end of 2021, it seems that December’s 2021.12 release has actually been fine for Pro Tools all along!! Where things were tricky was with Avid’ Complete Bundle plugins that prevented Pro Tools from booting.
This was all fixed last night with Apple’s release of 12.3, which apparently fixed some issues in the OS that broke the Complete Plugin Bundle – and Avid followed suit a few days later with a new revision of the Complete Bundle plugins version 2022.2, essentially now making Pro Tools formally compatible with Monterey (So it was Apple all along… who knew!) and Avid have formally qualified the version.
But there are a couple of complexities involved that users should be aware of:
• It’s 2021.12 that’s been qualified – anything below that may be tricky, but feel free to report your usage if you’re working with < Pro Tools 2021.12.
• Apple’s Monterey 12.3 is the version that is required for the plugin bundle to work, and thus Pro tools!
• Complete Bundle v2022.2 plugins are required – previous versions won’t work. They should be available from your Avid Account or from Avid link as individual installers. If you don’t have a licence to the Complete Bundle ( you should – there are some gems in there), then this wouldn’t matter to you
If you want to learn a little more about what “Avid Qualified” means – it’s a term that’s bandied about a lot but it can be misunderstood – you can read our article here that gives our thoughts on the subject.
While I’m sure many would prefer to continue the fashionable trend of ‘Avid bashing’ – I think we could probably surmise that Monterey was holding Pro Tools hostage, and it was the release of 12.3 that finally allowed Avid to give us a compatible version of the plugins that were causing the issues, and they were able to be pretty reactive considering there was only a few days between 12.3’s release and Avid’s CB update.
Great stuff Avid – we’ll be moving over to Monterey in the coming week – we’ll let you know how it all goes!
